A Life Without Limits

Todays’s workout: Bike – 90km+
Yesterday’s workout: Run – 8km

Last week, Ryan and I watched a plethora of superhero movies to get caught up to speed before seeing “The Avengers” on the opening day. The release of this movie was highly anticipated by Ryan, and admittedly, after watching Ironman 1 and 2, Thor, and Captain America (sorry Hulk, we didn’t have time for you!) I was looking forward to it too!

Though not in any of the movies (that I am aware of), did you know there is a Marvel character with the alias ‘Triathlon’? Not surprisingly, Triathlon has superhuman speed, strength, endurance, durability, senses and healing. But while most notable comic book superheroes appear on paper and in film only, I am certain there are some real life triathlon superheroes amongst us.

Triathlon – Marvel Comics Character

Case and point – Chrissie Wellington. She may not be a household name for everyone out there, but for triathletes, she certainly is. She is easily one of the most incredible athletes this world has to offer, in any sport, both men and women alike. Earlier this week, her new book “A Life Without Limits” arrived (Ryan had pre-ordered it for me 🙂 )and so far, I can’t put it down. It is a very honest look inside her life, on a surprisingly personal level.

Half way through. Can’t put it down!

Not only is Chrissie a four time Ironman World Champion (earning her first title less than a year after going pro), she has never lost at the Ironman distance. She holds the world record for the World Championship course as well as for the fastest iron-distance race. Among her most notable accomplishments was her 8th place finish at Ironman South Africa last year. That is, 8th place overall – including both men and women – meaning she beat an entire field of professional men, save for 7 of them. On that day, she had the fastest marathon time of any man or women on the course. This is just one example that demonstrates the greatness of her ability.

Here is one of my favourite Chrissie Wellington moments, as she comes back after a flat tire at the Ironman World Championships in 2008. She, of course, goes on to win.

Though she is an ideal role model for any athlete, as she continues to narrow the gap between male and female athletic performance, she is a particular inspiration to girls/women around the world.

From the small amount of the book that I have read so far, I get the sense that it is not just her incredible athletic career that makes her the amazing person that she is. Outside of these accomplishments, Chrissie has done some amazing things. I can’t wait to read more!
After my ride of course. At least 90km outside in the beautiful weather, here we go!
